So what’s the first tune you listen to when you wake up? And what’s in your coffee? Wait, you don’t have to answer them but hear me out. This tune is something you might want to listen to. Mornings are not easy. But having something to boost up your Energy is a plus. And this is why this song is something you should check out. It helped me today. I am sure it is going to help you. If you like instrumental music featuring a lead guitar in the vein of the masters like Steve Vail and Joe Satriani, then this is it.
I admit I am kind of missing that kind of music. It seems the current flavor is more beat-driven with 4 chord progressions. There is nothing wrong with these, but it is worth knowing that there are other forms of music. In fact, these different forms of music prove to be far more interesting in terms of complexity. And oh yes, not being mainstream is a plus. However, Energy is getting more popular. In fact, it now has over 8,000 views.
I like this tune for its use of an exotic scale which is so rare in music these days. I also like the driving beat and that insistent bass. It has a nice balance that the keys are there to serve the guitar-which this track is all about. If you are looking for a piece of music to rock your day, then this is it. Have a listen over a cup of warm coffee and the goodness of your soul.

New Mary Fahl (former lead singer of October Project) Album is Coming!

Finally! After two years of lockdown and non-musical events, it is great to have something to celebrate. 2022 is like a minor key waiting for a resolution. As with all things musical, it is always a hit or miss. There are very few artists that can jolt me out of the stupor. Yes, you read that. I’ve been blogging about music since 2009. It seems like everything is in cycles when you have stayed that long. As in Hermeticism, you have to ride the law of rhythm. Even when it is not working in your favor. Once you remain on the path of your true calling, then good things happen.

This is what I have noticed in the long career of Mary Fahl. She did not start in the music industry as “the next girl” but rather as a serious artist who has discovered her authentic voice. She did not enter the business as someone who is a sponge waiting for the industry to shape her. She already knew what she wanted because of her firm foundation. One can say that she did her work, building knowledge and skills to survive the volatile and fickle world of the recording industry. 

Sure, I’ve also been monitoring her former band October Project. After decades, I can say that she made the right choice to be a solo artist. While her former band focuses more on the classical albeit conservative influences, Mary’s taste has always been edgy. In fact, that eclecticism has taken her to places. Even now, listening to The Other Side of Time which is her debut album furthered my opinion that is it an album that is worth discovering again and again. The styles are timeless and don’t adhere to trite musical pastiche, but instead continue to challenge the listener repeatedly. 

Can’t Get It Out Of My Head is the upcoming album’s title. Although Ms. Fahl hasn’t shared details about the album, I am sure it will blow your mind. The people she chooses to work with are always spot on. Here’s a snippet of her bio mentioning the upcoming album:


 Over the past few years she’s been touring and recording on her own label, Rimar Records and her recent releases are garnering awards including an Indie Acoustic Award for Best Live Album for “Live at the Mauch Chunk Opera House” (filmed for PBS) and a 2020 Independent Music Award for her recent holiday album, “Winter Songs and Carols”. Her latest release, a Blu-ray 5.1 surround DVD, “From the Dark Side of the Moon“, brilliantly mixed by Bob Clearmountain, won the 2021 Immersive Album Audio Listener’s Choice award and was named “Immersive Album of the Year” by Life in Surround. Now she returns with “Can’t Get It Out of My Head”, a collection of songs that she calls “essential” to her development as an artist. “The challenge was to make each of these songs my own or why bother…”, and her interpretations of Neil Young, George Harrison, Richard Thompson and Pink Floyd among others, all recorded in stereo and 5.1 surround, do just that.

Suzanne Ciani has been making stunning modular performances for years. She’s a pioneer in modular synths using the Buchla 200 series as her main gear. She also worked with other synthesizer brands and performed side by side with famous musicians like Vangelis for her “The Velocity of Love” album.

It must be wonderful to be Suzanne Ciani, having created a legacy. She also opened doors to other young musicians who want to create and perform using the Buchla synthesizers and other modular synths. This video shows how she can create her music using an intuitive instrument that can overwhelm a beginner because this is not how you play a traditional instrument with keyboards. She is working with energy and voltage switches to create captivating sounds.

Seaboard RISE 2

After being away for quite a bit, I discovered the world of MIDI and keyboard. Before I know it, I got into the rabbit hole. It has become a bit of an obsession. Now I am ordering my first MIDI keyboard. I will post details here when I received it. It’s not one of those Arturia, M-Audio, Korg or Alesis but I reckon it will do the job for me as a beginner.

I got into thinking of composing my own tunes because I’ve been doing bicycle blogging and I am afraid, using other people’s tunes even though they are copyright -free might have future implications. So, that’s how I got into this hobby after learning a few tricks via Garage Band.

This one is called  Seaboard RISE 2 by a company called ROLI. It’s truly captivating at first glance. It looks so slick and the design in clean. The touch keys also remind me of the Buchla easel for its intuitive design. This is something I look forward to having in the future when I have the budget for it.

This looks like a good instrument for beginners and professionals. It also looks great on stage if you know what I mean.

Sunshine Vibe: A Place To Call Our Own Joe Symes & The Loving Kind

It took me a while to write about my decent observation/reaction about this new EP but I will soldier on. I am talking about the A Place to Call Our Own by Liverpool’s Joe Symes and the Loving Kind. So the music was just sitting there waiting for its time to be heard. And the surprise was all worth it. Remember, I wrote something about them a few years ago. I was struck by their sense of melody, harmony and that unique vibe that they can call their own. Is the title a nod to their native place? Perhaps it is. Or maybe it is up to the listeners to create their own story based on the imagery of each song.

The subjects deal about everyday life, relationships, nostalgia, and how life moves on in the midst of chaos and resolution. I notice a hint of Teenage Fan Club and Travis there but perhaps this is normal ion a band that is known to record memorable melodic songs. Their musical career spans a few years and they have grown better with each release. Even Joe’s singing has attained that depth of expression which is sweet, ironic and also sad at times. But if there is one word that defines this release it’s FUN. Yes! With somewhere around half an hour, you have songs that make you get off your feet, smile and supercharge your day. The energy and optimism is all over the second track Follow You. I love how the drums roll with such insistent glee.

Other songs are worth your ears if you are a big fan of Oasis, The Beatles and even The Smiths. There is that spoonful of Johnny Marr in It’s All Make Believe. There is no dull moment in A place To Call Our Own. When you find yourself struggling on a bad day, I suggest you pop this up and see how the mood changes. Music is there to uplift us when we are down. This is something that Joey Symes and the Loving Kind always deliver!
