Hungarian Musical Phenomenon Koryan Daniel Csernei Talks About His New EP

Hungarian musical artist Koryan Daniel Csernei dabbles between writing music that is suited for films or computer games. Then there’s that singer-songwriter aspect that makes his works accessible to a wider public. Following his musical career, I can safely say that he falls in the  category of the composer/artists who are comfortable writing in the background. They more concerned with the craft and they don’t usually care about the fame aspect of the field. They seem to be satisfied with the output.

He handed me the answers in this interview after sometime as he is currently working on several music-related projects-a follow-up to the EP, the building of his recording studio

1. What inspired you to make this new EP?


The reason is too complicated. Actually it started with a demo song (Emberibb maszk) that was inspired by someone, who was close to me. The title of this song is talking about a human mask to hide the symbol of the lies, hypocrisy, the charade.
Then the momentum carried me with itself and I made two other songs too, in it I’m talking to the people. So the theme is similar.
 
2. What was the process involved in creating this recording?
There are two types. When I have a new idea, and write/compose a complete song, or when I have a theme, or a half music, or lyrics from the past and I finish it because I get idea, or I find it good and I want to make it complete.
Most often I write sheet music for the instruments, then I learn it and record. I insert a drum machine, and record the guitars at home. The vocals are recorded usually in my friend’s studio / Power Source Studio. Then I do the after-works and mastering at home.
 
3. Your songs are personal but some are also filled with social commentary. What are the topics close to your heart?
There is not a favorite topic. I compose from inside, my current feelings, my current opinions.
4. I love the way you sing and arrange the songs. Who influenced your singing style?
Thanks, but I think there is nothing extra. I sing the way I can. I have no qualification. I didn’t learn to sing. So I don’t think I’m a good singer, rather I know I’m not. I just like to do it. I have some favorite performer, but I cannot and I don’t want imitate them. As I said I sing the way I can, as the actual music requires.
 
5. Thanks for translating some tracks from your native Hungarian to English. Are you planning to record English songs in the future?
You are welcome. Yes, I’m currently working on that. My next EP will be in English. With my bad accent. 😀
 
6. Can you explain the title of the EP? Why Human Mask?
 
Actually, it’s More human mask, or Humanest mask. I don’t know which is right. As I made mention in the first answer it’s started from a demo. In this song I asked someone to wear a more humane mask for hiding her bad properties, features, such as lies, hypocrisy, charade, untrustworthiness. I asked her for more humanity. 
I cannot explain it better. 😀 Sorry. So this song gave the title for the EP.
What I like about Mr Csernei is that he doesn’t take himself too seriously and he is really down to earth. He is not your typical metalhead/rockstar. He is actually an artist in a true sense of the word and a good friend of mine. I am posting his new stuff which is a different  take on a Katy Perry song.

Industrial Strength Set To The Groove of Pop:LÜJAH by Rakans

The internet is a good place to discover unique musical artists. I discovered the music of Rakans in the social media. He really takes time to talk to his listeners about his ideas. He is also happy to promote other artists. I heard probably two songs which made me realize that he has a potential to make it huge in the pop music scene. You know why? He doesn’t just sound interesting. He LOOKS interesting. His avant garde fashion sense is meant  to inspire and provoke.

Fashion and music go together!

He calls his music avant-garde pop/Industrial pop. And for a good reason. Rakans has created tunes that anyone can dance to. But these are not your typical ‘nice sweet sounding pop’ associated with the likes of Taylor Swift or Katy Perry.If you are uninitiated to edgy side of electronic music then Lüjah might sound strange, dissonant or even chaotic. But if you listen carefully, there is that unified idea that pulses throughout the rhythms and harmonies. His lyrics are fascinating.

Redsulfur is the current single. It is also my favourite as it reminds me of Nine Inch Nails and Massive Attack. But the rapping is all his. If you haven’t seen the music video yet then you better check it out. It is really interesting. Challenging established ideas is what Lüjah is all about. It is also about being faced with contradictions and how you deal with them. If you ask me, this album is better than anything released by other artists in the genre. I think this is more interesting than Skrillex. I think he will have Skrillex have a run for his money.

Gummy Bears hints the relationship of American hiphop to his European sound. And he can really sing. In Prayers, he’s singing about the great divide that religion imposes in all of us. And he belts out like George Michael too. What I appreciate about his work, is his dedication to the craft of writing pop songs. There is that slick sound in his recordings which I appreciate. Listen to BowBowBow which is one of his catchiest tracks. It will set you in the mood to strut.

Whoever tornadoman14 is, he left us with a timeless gem that I was not able to see the first time it came out. I am talking about the full concert of the October Project way back in 1996 after they released their sophomore album Falling Further In. Yes I read the magazine reviews but information was very slow in the 90s.  Finally here it is. And as usual I am captivated by the gorgeous voice of Mary Fahl. She is promoting her single Exiles. It’s a theme from the audio book of Anne Rice called The Wolves of Mid Winter.

John Bassett: Unearth

With poignant songwriting style, I am sure English singer/songwriting John Bassett has already captured a huge fan base. This music isn’t what I would call as ‘typical folk rock’ as it covers a huge spectrum of genres. There is also a kind of elegant way in which he builds his songs from ground up. You can really tell when an artist deserves a respect from his idols due to the way he crafts his tunes.

This is his solo release through his seasoned style. Harmonies and big hooks are typical of his music. He has a unique way of choosing his chords, making most of them sound like sun’s rays. His vocal harmonies are warm and appealing. His guitar playing always stands out. In Unearth, the other supporting instruments are tightly woven and each song has its story to tell.

I feel as if I am transported to another world upon listening to the first track Stay Away from the Dark. He sings in many layers of expressions. And the lyrics? His songs have a strong sense of self. It also revolves around one’s state in the midst of external forces like people, places and alienation(as in the song Nothing Sacred). There are also times when palpable hope shines through like in the case of Keep Dear.

As I mentioned, his voice has layers, so is his craft. Everything in this album is cloaked in different moods. The layers weave and undulate seamlessly. It’s like being dazzled by the sun’s ray in the midst of the rain.

I think the strength in his tracks is his ability to assimilate pop elements like in Nothing Sacred but at the same time keeping everything in borderline. It means that years from now, these songs will never sound outdated in a sense that the sweetness is all over the album but he layers it with other  elements. This reminds me a bit of OK Computer by Radiohead. Unearth is a must-have album if you want something timeless but sounds like the tunes are what you hear on the radio.
