Avonmore by Bryan Ferry

I am listening to Avonmore which is the new album from the frontman of Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry. Something happened in the course of the time I was listening. I am only halfway to the album and I can tell this is one of the best albums to ever happen in 2014. It is beautiful, advanced and electrifying. And how can you miss that voice? It’s been with us since the 70s and it shows no sign of surrendering to time. If there is something that happened to it, time only made it better. Avonmore

Of course I have my favourites like Soldier of Fortune and Driving Me Wild. I also love the title track Avonmore and the slower tunes. Ferry is a sorcerer of songs and he is dangerous because he makes you wish you can sing and write songs that way. I think the term ‘polish’ is what’s lacking in today’s young singer/songwriters. The polishing part is left to the producers or engineers. Hopefully this album will reintroduce that in the current scene.

Now that I have completed listening to the album, I have picked my favourites including the title track and the slower tunes like Soldier of Fortune. Everything was like a carnival ride from the opening track Loop De Li to the last song Johnny and Mary. Listening to an album should be, after all, a ride. It must fun! Check out his version of Sondheim’s Send in the Clowns. It’s epic.

The Palestinian Tatreez designs sewn by Paula

Passion is an adventurous creature. It takes you to places. For example, I know of Paula as a musician. The knowledge that she teaches as a profession came later. Then there’s this other thing she does in her free time. She has stitches and sends them framed to friends as gifts. They’re beautiful and creations. Then, somehow she that with her music. And it is not hard to imagine now, as she has not lonely contributed a track to Moments of Silence ( A compilation album to raise money for the UNRWA Gaza Relief Fund ). She has just completed framed pieces of her works, the Palestinian Tatreez designs. The proceeds (along with her music track Feeling Free ) will go to Moments of Silence fundraising campaign.

She posted this on her Facebook page as of today: Hi everyone, here is the information about the Palestinian Tatreez piece on sale to raise money for the UNRWA Gaza Relief Fund. Blast from the Past: Boys Don’t Cry by The Cure!
What’s your favourite 80s track? Mine is Boys Don’t Cry by The Cure. There is something sweet and mopey about it. Well, it is kind of mopey. Great tune to start the week as you look at WORK and think of it as a four-letter word.

Rockadelic If I Had Your Love by The Marwills.

Toronto based band The Marwills will release a new single called If I Had Your Love on November 20. Ohhh the swagger and the dripping sensuality of the song! This reminds me of those funkadelic songs from Cream and the oozing testosterone energy of Led Zeppelin  The bluesy classic rock style is definitely going to put them on the map as more and more listeners are getting tired of the same ol same ol adult alternative tunes that saturate the airwaves and the internet. And that Brett Bonnie guy has a kind of voice that can stop a traffic! It is time for a revolution. And that revolution is The Marwills.

New Album: “Moments of Silence” for the Gaza fundraiser compilation.

The electronic music community has once again shown solidarity by getting together and record their own tracks for this compilation album. It is called “Moments of Silence” for the Gaza fundraiser compilation. I know that this is going to be a great album in a sense that the theme is all about that longing for peace and also the love for humanity. I think the merits of this album go two ways:

1. To show awareness about the ongoing situation on Gaza. How millions of lives are torn apart; and children who have nothing to do with war that is created by adults, have to suffer.

2. Fundraising is another purpose of this compilation. All proceeds to UNRWA. Even if you are not an electronic music fan, supporting this album also means that you contributed to our desire for peace.

Here is the facebook page for those who want to be updated about this recording. Simply lke or follow the page then watch out for announcements. https://www.facebook.com/ambientmomentsofsilence?fref=photo

There are 34 tracks in this compilation. The tunes are calming, spiritual and beautiful. This album will appeal to lovers of New Age and Contemporary Instrumental Music. In this age of distraction and information overload, I think this album stands out as a great companion to your meditation and soul-searching. All the 34 bands/artists have their own style. Some go for more electronic approach while there are others who incorporate acoustic instruments. The styles vary from Jazz to World Music. I have my own favorites. One of them is Feeling Free by Paula!

So what’s the story behind Moments of Silence? According to Brad Zacharias:

“This past summer, I was overwhelmed by the news about the fact that Israel was sending bombs to Gaza and killing so many children. Having a small 3 year old little girl it broke my heart knowing how helpless the families were under such horrible conditions. I felt helpless as I know that we should all protect our children – no matter what. I was shocked and saddened. So I composed a song to help release my feelings. And knowing other like-minded musicians out there were feeling the same emotions I was, I decided that raising money through a compilation to help benefit these kids and families would bring me as close as possible to extending my hand among others in helping benefit these children and their families.”
