New album in PledgeMusic from Gothic Rockers Imbolg

This will be our second album featuring styles of Goth, Punk, Death Rock and Synth-Imbolg.

Gothic rock is alive and well. Though the genre went underground several years ago, their’s a renaissance lately. Thanks to millennials who want to try cool bands before any of you heard them, I think it is ok to say that this decade is a healthy time for Gothic rock.

Nate Dal Cais started Imbolg 10 years ago. Apart from the robust and alluring music, they’re also posting up a Pledge Music link for fans to help support their upcoming project. According to Dal Cais:

We are taking preorders for our new album and offering some limited time perks, plus some of the money goes to charity. I may have asked you before, but we just made lots of updates.

They’re proving to me day to day that it is OK to have a dark heart but still show a little kindness inside. Well, in fact most of the cool people I know are gothic rockers and they’re really amazing. which is why I really support the genre.

NYC based band has been performing in the Northeast region for close to a decade noted for their ritualistic stage show and undying spirit that helps all in attendance capture the true meaning of the Pagan Holiday the band was named after. This particular album has an eclectic feel to it, where as some some songs are slow, others are fast, some are heavier and some are lighter, and a few songs are instrumental pieces like “Echoes on Water” and “Tragedy in the Key of A major”. All however state powerful messages whether it is based off a traditional story such as in the case of the song: “Tieg O’Kane & the Corpse”, or the song played early on in the album about the simple feelings of disdain for being alive called: “Duisigh(awaken)” . All these songs are ensured to bring out emotions that one and all can truly relate to. Except in the Case of the song called : “Thy Dark Gift”, unless of course you have just become a Vampire

Storm EP by Dominion: A taster of what’s to come.

Only a week before Halloween and I have here a copy of Storm by Dominion. The 3-song EP rocks until the end and leaves a great impression of what’s to come from this band musically. Their music has all the elements that genre aficionados are looking for. And on top of that there is this live energy that’s very unique with the band.

I got a copy of Storm the single around February 14, 2013. I posted an entry :

Storm is embellished with dark melodies and haunting keyboards courtesy of Ollie Palma. Lead vocalist Doi Porras reminds me of the unholy matrimony between Robert Smith of The Cure and Wayne Hussey of The Mission. The drums, bass and guitars are aggressive but sophisticated. Yes that’s Goth beauty for you-along with the term haunting.

Two years later, here comes the EP containing three songs. Usually, other bands could not wait to release a full-length album but they are taking  a less impulsive route. For whatever reasons I will find out when I get to do an interview with the band soon.

The EP starts with the title track. This goes straight into the guts as I already heard this two years ago. I know the three-note keyboard line of Ollie Palma in the midst of the portentous guitar sound. And then there’s that beat and powerful vocals. Mandirigma follows which is interesting because it is in Tagalog. The native language of Doi Porras. I love the keyboards because they remind me of those used by bands like Tiamat and The Mission. From the death rock snarl to an almost operatic highs, Doi Porras proves that he has the pipes that can give their UK counterparts a run of their money.

The Last Time closes the EP with that familiar guitar sound characteristic of the genre. This song will spoil Goth fans. And though Storm is short, This recording shows us what Dominion is capable of achieving in years to come. It is also worth to mention that I love the work of bassist Luis Murillo and drummer Dave Jurgens in this recording.

As Halloween is drawing near, I recommend Storm to all music enthusiasts out there who would like to support Filipino talents abroad. This is a perfect taster of what’s to come from this LA based band.

Pledgemusic with the March Violets: Mortality Tour and Album

One of the influential bands in the darkwave genre, the March Violets have an album coming out. And this is possible because of your help. There are many things coming up from this beautiful band. There’s the Mortality tour(which happens to be the name of the upcoming album) and also goodies that they are giving out when you make your pledge.

October is a good month for this type of music. The Goth in me loves it. And I am sure the children of darkness out there are going to like the new album, Mortality. Here’s the message from the band:

The ‘Mortality Tour and Album’ is the new Pledge from the March Violets. Throughout October pledgers get to experience a month of touring around the East Coast, with Backstage Action, Road Movie high jinx and other Purple nonsense. The Violets will be playing classic tracks live, then recording them in November in Chicago. With exclusive daily footage and a virtual Access Pass pledgers will be able to participate in the highs and lows of the entire Tour and Studio Saga. The involvement continues right up to Xmas, with an Advent Calendar with interesting Violet goodies behind each door, culminating in the Album download on Xmas day! 
Physical ‘exclusives’, that will be shipped after Xmas, include a Double CD, a Vinyl LP and a double DVD with a full concert, a road movie, and footage from the entire life of the band, right back to the early Eighties. That cool indie label Patetico Recordings has released another album that will turn dream pop heads. Broken As WE Are is the new album by Panophonic. It still has that same ‘analog flavour’ as the other Panophonic albums. This means that when you listen to the songs, each one sounds like it’s from a cassette table released in the 80s. And I think that’s the kind of sound the band have tried to emulate since their first album. I think this work. There are those of us who have this nostalgic cravings for all things 80s.

The album starts with a slow track called Your’s to Keep. This one ends with a great electric guitar solo. Served Cold follows with this great drum pattern. It’s raining outside and this is a good soundtrack. If you like early 80s Goth stuff then you will appreciate this one. Especially if you are a big fan of The Joy Division.

The title track Broken as We Are sounds trippy. In fact it reminds me of any Siouxsie and the Banshees song from the late 80s – early 90s. They exploit dissonance in a good way adding something to the bare atmosphere which feels like you are walking in an abandoned warehouse late at night. Nothing Left is quite a surprise as it uses the keyboard as the accompaniment. You would not suspect the singer is American than Brit. The somber melody can really haunt your dreams like any scene from a Sandman comic book.

Understanding Emptiness has that hypnotic drum beats. Perhaps they are channeling The Cure. This is another ‘thriller/suspense’ candidate for any TV series. You know where the main character looks like Johnny Depp in Edward Scissorhands. Haunt My Dreams is too dissonant for my taste but I am sure when you are in the mood for something dark and depressing then this will suit you. Sweetness and Light is another slow scorcher that borrows heavily from Ian Curtis/Joy Division style, while Until the End takes you out from your stupor into a slow dance under the rain. The keyboards are like flapping butterflies tugging at your pained heart.

The Great Manipulator is another nod to the great Gothic/New Wave bands of years gone by. The upbeat As I Rise closes the album. Broken As We Are is a satisfying musical journey into moods, feelings and decades. This is potent and beautiful , all from the awesome Panophonic.
