I stumbled upon this pop artist via Instagram. He is an actor model and yes, singer/songwriter from Kansas. I don’t know if you will agree with me if I say that people with acting and modelling backgrounds have the gift of charisma. As when they know how to develop this gift then I think they will really become famous. It doesn’t matter if you are not into pop music. This artist is excellent in guitar and piano. In fact, his Instagram posts have short videos featuring him doing covers. His falsetto is so clear you’d though he is not human. I am not a huge fan of r&b but Minx knows how to reinvent the genre making it accessible to many people.

I will keep my eyes and ears on him and see how he climbs the charts sooner than anyone can expect. He gives off an aura of kindness and sincerity which are probably just my subjective observation but I can’t deny there is something about Luke Minx. And we will all know that soon.

After the Storm is the beginning of Creativity for J.P. Kallio

Every time singer/songwriter J.P. Kallio mentions that he has a new album out, I am always excited about it. I will explain the reasons why. First, I knew of his talent from his two bands and I know he is prolific. You have would probably agree with me that we are so damn lazy sometimes to get off our coaches and do something out there that can affect other people in a positive way. Yes we know we can do it because we have creativity but, motivation is not there. And J.P. is immuned to this creative laziness. Just look at his website and you will know what I mean.afterthestormalbumcover

He is also a blogger. That’s the second thing. In fact he is more productive than I am. I am amaze at the amount of ideas he can come up in a week. And on top of these crazy stuff, he also tours with his band. Really crazy eh? He is a staunch advocate of coffee in the morning. I guess I need to trust that coffee can make the world beautiful!

He is a musician’s friend. He is not bothered to share his craft and the tips that can go a long way. Now that his new album is out let me tell you what it is. It has twelve songs. The title is After The Storm. Which becomes clear when you finish listening to the twelve songs. These are acoustic tracks recorded with guitar and other instruments. The general feeling is that of being inside a coffee house. The songs vary from laid back, relaxing ballads to faster ones with provocative themes. For example Fool is a song about the perils of alcoholism but written in a humorous way.

If you love Dylan then you will love the title track. It has that amazing guitar playing which I haven’t heard in like ages. Still others are interesting on both the lyrical and musical aspects. Mama Was Right is heartwarming as a freshly baked muffin. So take your pick now and listen to the intelligence that flows in every song. And yes you will feel his big heart that knows how to love creativity.

Florescent by Protobaby addresses our generation of excess and isolation

The video starts out with a paranoid guy walking down the narrow street then getting harassed by a couple of bystanders. He gets into his place then starts putting on that virtual reality glasses. Now, I gotta warn you. You need to have a strong stomach to finish the music video because the scenes that follow are graphic.

Man, that is one hell of an actor. A good one. I would definitely refuse the part(unless it’s from a favorite band and knowing my track record I can be easily seduced). Now I know the video is going to shake the indie scene. It has made a huge impression. It is hard to ignore. I think a lot of netizens out there think so too! It’s taken from Protobaby’s debut album ‘Spark.’ Flourescent is directed and edited by Shane Serrano. Starring Adam Traynor.

…..Which leads me to the music of the band. I love the name. It sounds cute even though the music hardly sounds the same. Think of Joy Division and old Cure. Now you get the picture. They have another awesome track called State of Affairs which finally cements my liking for this band’s music.

Protobaby are a four piece band with members Colm McGuinness, Tony Monahan, Bryan Ronan and Aidan Graham. They are from Limerick Ireland. The same place that gave us the Cranberries.

The team:

Colm McGuinness: Vocals-This guy’s got amazing pipes. I love his style of singing. It has a dark beauty and can be quite expressive.

Tony Monahan: Electric Guitar-Now that’s the kind of playing I miss.

Bryan Ronan: Drums-He is pounding those skins with gusto.

Aidan Graham: Bass-He’s got the groove and he is the reason why I got to know this band.

Check the video out and if you like Flourescent then do share it.

February 2015 Indie Music Updates

Hello folks! It’s a soothing weekend and I am bringing to you updates on cool music around the web. It’s amazing to know that 2015 is anther great year of music. We have electronic, acoustic and other types of music that’s ‘not radio.’

I discovered Alex Pardini more than a year ago when I stumbled upon his music on the web. Since thn we have kept a tight correspondent covering many topics including photography( he’s a pro). He gets better each year as he creates fantastic and elegant tunes. His music speaks to the side of me who likes finer, better and beautiful things in life. This is the first playlist I listened upon waking up. These are evening tunes but then again, beautiful music is always enriching any time of the day. So good, so rich!

***

If you like something acoustic and soothing then check this song by singer/songwriter J.P. Kallio. What I like about his songs is that, you can appreciate his songs even if you are not a fan of folk music. His recordings are always excellent in terms of clarity and balance. This is the kind of quality that I look for in any stripped down tune.

***

Whenever I listen to any Michael Stovall song, I get carried away. His emotional pieces always have a room for the ‘soundtrack of your life’ kind of moment. The depth of lyrics and beautiful singing are his strong points. The melodies are his gold.

***

Talents between New Zealand and Ireland have created Altocirrus. I feel so fortunate to listen to their latest album plus review it for this site!

***

This musical asset of Romania by the name of LeVant continues to dazzle me with his unique ideas. His tunes are somewhat in the  pop-but not so pop, category. His deep understanding of Classical, Medieval,Jazz,Electronic is astounding. Unjaded is his latest release.

***

Pierre Masse continues to dabble with different styles of music. From acoustic to electronic, his versatility is excellent. I don’t think any artist who started a career doing acoustic rock could pull that off elegantly. And he did. Amazing!

***

I am enjoying this new upload from Norwegian artist Kjell Roll Elgsaas. Very energetic and complex. Beautiful beats.

***

And last but not the least, I need you to listen to this beautiful song from Cornish singer/songwriter Dan Aston.  Lemonade Sea is the title. This is recorded at The VIP Lounge in Penzance and featuring Sue Aston on violin and members from Cornish jazz band, Endangered Species.

Enjoy your weekend with beautiful music.

Under the Wire releases Everything Haunts Me

Band: Under the Wire

Album: Everything Haunts Me.

Songs: I am nothing/Oceans are none/Drifter now/Down/Black out/Melancholy/Self Medicated.

What you can expect from every Under the Wired releases is the electricity that flows through each song. There is the freshness yet the nostalgic not to the great bands of the 80s. I like to imagine them as a band that continue to carry the torch of great music without sacrificing their credibility to the evil of mainstream pop.

Everything Haunts Me is the new EP, which is their second, and contains 7 tracks. I am nothing has a mellow style with chilled beats. The fullness of the music is done by layering. Under the Wire is comprised of two people: Tom Lugo and Jason Ellis. I am nothing reminds me of old This Mortal Coil. Remember the 4AD project headed by Ivo Watts-Russell in the 80s? I am not sure if UTW have embraced the 4AD credo but I can sense a bit of that in this EP.

Oceans are None is explosively beautiful. I haven’t heard something like this in ages. The only artists that come to mind are Peter Gabriel and early Sarah McLachlan. The beats are seductive. The vocals are really awesome. Like the first EP, the tunes from Everything Haunts Me showcase a distinct guitar style that shows its loyalty to the dream pop genre.

Either it’s The Cure or Fiction Factory, Drifter now nods on these bands. Two thumbs up to the keyboards. And since I am not a lyrics guy I paid more attention to the sound effects than the stories behind the songs. But if you want to know what they are all about then I will tell you. They deal with either unrequited love, despair, loneliness, inner conflict-the stuff of Gothic rock. For some reason, Under the Wire makes depressing themes sound like Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

There’s Down-a kind of suspense and moody tune in the vein of Siouxsie and the Banshees.  Blackout behind jangles with Bauhaus inspired chords and distorted drums. Melancholy has an ethereal style that reminds me of early Dead Can Dance and at times it’s Joy Division. Self medicated closes the EP and I think it is the most cinematic track in this EP.

Under the Wire continues to challenge the status quo of music, as these
two musicians write and record tunes that you can never -and will never-hear again in alternative rock.
