February 2015 Indie Music Updates

Hello folks! It’s a soothing weekend and I am bringing to you updates on cool music around the web. It’s amazing to know that 2015 is anther great year of music. We have electronic, acoustic and other types of music that’s ‘not radio.’

I discovered Alex Pardini more than a year ago when I stumbled upon his music on the web. Since thn we have kept a tight correspondent covering many topics including photography( he’s a pro). He gets better each year as he creates fantastic and elegant tunes. His music speaks to the side of me who likes finer, better and beautiful things in life. This is the first playlist I listened upon waking up. These are evening tunes but then again, beautiful music is always enriching any time of the day. So good, so rich!

If you like something acoustic and soothing then check this song by singer/songwriter J.P. Kallio. What I like about his songs is that, you can appreciate his songs even if you are not a fan of folk music. His recordings are always excellent in terms of clarity and balance. This is the kind of quality that I look for in any stripped down tune.

Whenever I listen to any Michael Stovall song, I get carried away. His emotional pieces always have a room for the ‘soundtrack of your life’ kind of moment. The depth of lyrics and beautiful singing are his strong points. The melodies are his gold.

Talents between New Zealand and Ireland have created Altocirrus. I feel so fortunate to listen to their latest album plus review it for this site!

This musical asset of Romania by the name of LeVant continues to dazzle me with his unique ideas. His tunes are somewhat in the  pop-but not so pop, category. His deep understanding of Classical, Medieval,Jazz,Electronic is astounding. Unjaded is his latest release.

Pierre Masse continues to dabble with different styles of music. From acoustic to electronic, his versatility is excellent. I don’t think any artist who started a career doing acoustic rock could pull that off elegantly. And he did. Amazing!

I am enjoying this new upload from Norwegian artist Kjell Roll Elgsaas. Very energetic and complex. Beautiful beats.

And last but not the least, I need you to listen to this beautiful song from Cornish singer/songwriter Dan Aston.  Lemonade Sea is the title. This is recorded at The VIP Lounge in Penzance and featuring Sue Aston on violin and members from Cornish jazz band, Endangered Species.

Enjoy your weekend with beautiful music.

LeVant – Sideways (Official Video)

There comes a point when music becomes too homogenized that breaking the rule of what music should be, comes to the fore. This is what I got when I listened to the recordings of LeVant( George D. Stanciulescu) and I tell you, his tunes can either be something you like right away or something that need time to proliferate themselves into your subconscious. One  example is the new single Sideways. It is a trip chilled out track with layered sounds and arresting vocals. It’s perfect to relax to after a long day but can also be a source of scrutiny if you want to know what it is all about.

I think his songs are snippets of 20th century music made into a delicious salad of beats and melodies, a witness to the evolution of musical styles. Such parts are distilled into a 4-minute song. Some of them approach the atonal realm of modern composers  Schoenberg. What made the complex parts cohesive are the rhythmic simplicity.

There is also something very Romanian about his music but this influence can be subtle. Now watching the music video made for Sideways, is such a treat. I don’t want to write spoilers so you better see it for yourself.

I asked him about the video. I noted that it really fits the music.  This was his reply:
“Well, the video was basically kind of indie filmed and it features one of the most known contemporary fringe performers in Romania, namely Irinel Anghel. A friend of mine filmed her perform, I did the editing & the montage, so probably that’s why the music & the visuals fit.”

Escape into the wind by Loic Rathscheck

About the video:

Loic:Thanks to Ives for sending me the Go Pro video mounted onto my dad’s vintage sail boat (Aile).

The pictured crew members are my dad and Ives. The music is a joint track from Paula and myself.

The challenge here was to edit material that came from only one camera perspective.

The idea was to create a video that shows the little importance of time when you sail. Let the wind take you along! Don’t be fooled though, concentration and effort are still required.

I have spent some good times at the Yacht Club de l’Ile de France.

This video is dedicated to my farther for his birthday, the kind people at the Yacht Club de l’Ile de France and to all those who enjoy sailing.

Icon by Nouvelle Electro

For those who haven’t heard yet, this was posted earlier this year. Nouvelle Electro as Paula(England) and Ian Henderson (Ireland)

This is a beautiful tribute to the late and great Marilyn Monroe.

One rainy night I was visited by a pale figure. He came through the gust of wind. I forgot to close the windows. All of a sudden his tall figure was in front of me. I protested that I am still watching the latest episode of Bones. But without much adieu, my tea cup shattered to pieces against the wall. And I was swept away by cold hands.

Dark chocolate diamonds poured from all sides as I listen to the aural sorcery of LeVant. Dark, part brooding, part ethereal-a perfect soundtrack for the rainy night. But you better not be alone.

The Goth in me loves this. I am sure kids who grew up listening to Diary of Dreams, Dead Can Dance, This Mortal Coil and Rasputina will love this work from a gifted Romanian composer.

Through Heaven’s Grace is the carrier single. It is a symphonic piece wrapped in chill out drums, choir and electronic harmonies. It makes me curious of its creator George D. Stanciulescu , and his obsession with spirituality and the human condition. LeVant is a potent project that digs into your veins like a vampire’s kiss…after the long day-comes the night.
