Mary Fahl: A Complex Vocal History and Style

A colossal voice that manages to soar to the heavens, releases a new EP plus talks of an upcoming album!

When October Project hit the mainstream(due partly to being signed to a major label), people were stunned by the voice of the lead singer Mary Fahl. What is it? At that time, listeners thought she sounded like Enya’s sister Moya Brennan(of Clannad) or Annie Lennox. There’s that dark beauty behind the supple voice. Back then, I was still exploring various musical genres and I was not aware of singers like Sandy Denny or Annie Haslam for reference(she’s a huge fan of them). Thanks to Fahl I was able to explore them gradually.

I think what’s amazing about her singing is what she does to such a big voice. It can sound light and airy especially the upper register. But it can also be dark and commanding when she is singing in her lower and comfortable range-the fuller contralto part. With an amazing band to back her up, her singing touched the imagination of many.

Fast forward two decades later, Fahl is on her own. But it is in her solo career that she’s able to experiment so much with the voice. You got to give her high-five for releasing two EPs, Three full-length albums and a live record. Her songs are also in three compilations, two among them are movie soundtracks. There is a full-length album in the talks. But in order for that to come into fruition (with great production along with her band) she has to raise funds. And that’s why Four Songs came into being. According to her website www.maryfahl.com :

FOUR SONGS is a collection of Italian arias beautifully produced by John Lissauer. This limited edition, signed and personalized EP is a fundraiser to help me complete the full album. Each purchase enters you into a drawing to receive a free copy of the fully produced album. * Order 5 copies or more and receive a free Mary Fahl T-shirt. Order 10 copies or more and receive 2 complimentary tickets to a Mary Fahl show near you.

Looking back, I think Mary Fahl is meant to happen. There will always be people like me who will gravitate towards such voice. There is nothing like it. It is hard to describe but her singing touches something in me that’s both mystical and emotional. Perhaps it is because of my unique way of looking at the world that I find her unique art inspiring. Perhaps it is that sensitivity of the soul that longs for something that is like heaven, if heaven is indeed real.

I stumbled upon this pop artist via Instagram. He is an actor model and yes, singer/songwriter from Kansas. I don’t know if you will agree with me if I say that people with acting and modelling backgrounds have the gift of charisma. As when they know how to develop this gift then I think they will really become famous. It doesn’t matter if you are not into pop music. This artist is excellent in guitar and piano. In fact, his Instagram posts have short videos featuring him doing covers. His falsetto is so clear you’d though he is not human. I am not a huge fan of r&b but Minx knows how to reinvent the genre making it accessible to many people.

I will keep my eyes and ears on him and see how he climbs the charts sooner than anyone can expect. He gives off an aura of kindness and sincerity which are probably just my subjective observation but I can’t deny there is something about Luke Minx. And we will all know that soon.

In this times of too much bubblegum, she’s a deluxe alternative. Watch the link to the video below of Chris Walden featuring her beautiful singing style. I recommend these Soundcloud artists

I am so passionate about Soundcloud. That is where I hear cool music all the time. That’s where musicians that I respect and admire post their tunes. That’s a place where I love to repost and tweet the uploads of these fantastic artists. So today it’s less talk and more Soundcloud links. These are the musicians that are hot on my list. I hope you enjoy their music as much as I did. And oh, it’s 5 am in the morning here.

Watch Pale Jacket – Dan Aston lyric video

Pale Jacket by Dan Aston will warm you!

Another great month is here. The autumn leaves are falling and there are reflective songs that play in our heads as we move to darker and colder months. But that doesn’t mean that we will let summer go so easily. The new single by Dan Aston has that summery melody with lyrics that are really suited to the season.

” I haven’t felt this alive in so long…

My wheels will keep turning strong”

This brings a smile on my face as this is an unabashed tribute to young love. This reminds me of The Beatles before they got so big. Perhaps the world can be chaotic and grim outside but this doesn’t mean we cannot fall inside and look into our endless summer. As I grow older as a listener, I start to appreciate the beauty of life’s simplicity and all that surround us, be it people, places or things.

I’ve always found Dan Aston’s singing as honest and beautiful. He has a good vocal range which continues to improve with age. He is backed by amazing musicians. Everything about the recording is clean, tight and well executed. And oh, this lyric video is amazing!

Thoughts behind the song from the artist:

Dan Aston: Recorded at VIP Lounge earlier in September, it has been recorded and produced by Dare Mason (Placebo, The Church, The Blow Monkeys). I previously worked with Dare on my EP ‘The Way Home’.

The single features some stellar performances by musicians that have really brought this new arrangement of the song to life.

The band :

Dan Aston (vocals, guitars),

Jack Williams (piano),

Tristan Latarche (drums) and James Martin (bass).
