Every time singer/songwriter J.P. Kallio mentions that he has a new album out, I am always excited about it. I will explain the reasons why. First, I knew of his talent from his two bands and I know he is prolific. You have would probably agree with me that we are so damn lazy sometimes to get off our coaches and do something out there that can affect other people in a positive way. Yes we know we can do it because we have creativity but, motivation is not there. And J.P. is immuned to this creative laziness. Just look at his website and you will know what I mean.
He is also a blogger. That’s the second thing. In fact he is more productive than I am. I am amaze at the amount of ideas he can come up in a week. And on top of these crazy stuff, he also tours with his band. Really crazy eh? He is a staunch advocate of coffee in the morning. I guess I need to trust that coffee can make the world beautiful!
He is a musician’s friend. He is not bothered to share his craft and the tips that can go a long way. Now that his new album is out let me tell you what it is. It has twelve songs. The title is After The Storm. Which becomes clear when you finish listening to the twelve songs. These are acoustic tracks recorded with guitar and other instruments. The general feeling is that of being inside a coffee house. The songs vary from laid back, relaxing ballads to faster ones with provocative themes. For example Fool is a song about the perils of alcoholism but written in a humorous way.
If you love Dylan then you will love the title track. It has that amazing guitar playing which I haven’t heard in like ages. Still others are interesting on both the lyrical and musical aspects. Mama Was Right is heartwarming as a freshly baked muffin. So take your pick now and listen to the intelligence that flows in every song. And yes you will feel his big heart that knows how to love creativity.
The video starts out with a paranoid guy walking down the narrow street then getting harassed by a couple of bystanders. He gets into his place then starts putting on that virtual reality glasses. Now, I gotta warn you. You need to have a strong stomach to finish the music video because the scenes that follow are graphic.
Man, that is one hell of an actor. A good one. I would definitely refuse the part(unless it’s from a favorite band and knowing my track record I can be easily seduced). Now I know the video is going to shake the indie scene. It has made a huge impression. It is hard to ignore. I think a lot of netizens out there think so too! It’s taken from Protobaby’s debut album ‘Spark.’ Flourescent is directed and edited by Shane Serrano. Starring Adam Traynor.
…..Which leads me to the music of the band. I love the name. It sounds cute even though the music hardly sounds the same. Think of Joy Division and old Cure. Now you get the picture. They have another awesome track called State of Affairs which finally cements my liking for this band’s music.
Protobaby are a four piece band with members Colm McGuinness, Tony Monahan, Bryan Ronan and Aidan Graham. They are from Limerick Ireland. The same place that gave us the Cranberries.
Colm McGuinness: Vocals-This guy’s got amazing pipes. I love his style of singing. It has a dark beauty and can be quite expressive.
Tony Monahan: Electric Guitar-Now that’s the kind of playing I miss.
Bryan Ronan: Drums-He is pounding those skins with gusto.
Aidan Graham: Bass-He’s got the groove and he is the reason why I got to know this band.
Check the video out and if you like Flourescent then do share it.
James Bullard has a new beautiful song called One Man Show
Occasionally, a singer/songwriter arrives in the indie scene which makes you wish you can sing and write songs like that. One Man Show is his latest upload via soundcloud. It’s a dreamy upbeat ballad which modern Beat poets will really embrace. I love the way he makes complex songs sound really simple. He has a knack for catchy melodies that never leave you. As of this moment, I have played the same song twice and I am planning to play it again and again until I finish writing this post.
He first broke into prominence as an actor in Ken Park. Instead of pursuing an acting career like his contemporaries, he decided to pack his guitar and pursued a musical career playing across cities and states. Now,he has earned loyal fans who will never trade him for anyone else because his artistry has captured the hearts and minds of thousands… eclipsing his former image as an actor.
*** Peter Chains and Athuja
In all my blog posts Peter Chains doesn’t need an introduction. He is a guy whose voice I praised in its emotional depth and beauty. Is it possible for a man to have a beautiful voice and be known for it? Yes. I would cite singers like the late Jim Morrison and Brendan Perry of Dead Can as the closest example. It is great to see him trying his voice on different styles. He is primarily a singer/songwriter but being with Athuja has proven that he can also do Jazz.
For now the band is creating new materials and jamming as they get ready for some serious live performance. I envision an album or EP next year. So far they have uploaded three tracks via their Facebook band page. Please remember that these are not studio quality recordings but they will give you an idea about the direction that the band is moving to.
Beautiful is a new single from European pop artist Alex Pardini. I love sophisticated house and chill-out music. That is why I am always enthusiastic with his every release because I am aware with the amount of effort that he puts in his craft. He is also a good acoustic and electric guitar player and you can hear his rifts now and then.
Did you notice anything new with singer/songwriter Layne Greene? Yes and you’ll know why.
Canadian singer/songwriter had lasik early this year and that explains the disappearance of the glasses. Well, it is not just about the glasses that’s gone . He is working on an official debut album produced by a big name in the music industry. He Has been working on a couple of songs for weeks and I had the pleasure of hearing them although everything is pretty much hush hush until the official announcement. The new songs are different from his usual stuff. They are more ‘radio friendly’ or ‘mainstream’ for lack of better terms. But this is a good thing because it proves that Layne Greene is ready for a bigger audience. He takes his musical career seriously and has no qualms performing in big venues when the
Layne Greene:The album is almost done!
Flash back two years ago. I met this wonderful kid who has a laid back attitude with bunch of songs on top of his head. He has written many but he made sure they got the craft and polish they needed before the release. This dedication to quality over quantity is reflected all over his life. And this extends beyond music. I’ve known him as a reliable fella with a heart of gold. Everyone who meets him can always attest to the fact that he is special and he has a keen sense professionalism.
He is working on the album quietly. He posts updates every now and then but the real bang will come when the album is out. It will be soon. I promise.
